The "City Of Lights"
Can you believe that Las Vegas, in 2017, registered a visitors count at 42.2 million people, and that was considered a “down year”. They based the fallen numbers on the shooting that occurred in Oct. that killed 58 persons and injured 851.
It didn't stop the building projects though. There are some hotel projects in place occurring between the Fashion Show Mall and the Stratosphere Casino Hotel. That's were the former Riviera, Saraha, and Stardust Casino/Hotels were housed. The major project there is a JWMarriott called the Drew. It is targeting a 4,000 room resort that will have a casino, plenty of restaurants and nightclubs, as well as 500,000 square foot convention and meeting space. This location, of course, is close to the large convention center already built.
In addition, Resorts World is planning a 3,000 room project in the area, and Wynn Resorts is slated to build a 1,500 room hotel. That is a total of 8,500 additional rooms in the Las Vegas market!!!!
At the current 149,000 room supply, this is the nations largest hotel market. Can you imaging having to try to fill that many rooms every night? The story goes though that last year the occupancy among Strip hotels was 90%. As one person remarked, “other cities would give an arm and a leg for that kind of occupancy percentage”.
The Westin Las Vegas, a few steps away from the Strip, just completed major renovations, transfiguring into the city's newest non-gaming, non-smoking option. Included in the update is a new, well-recognized, culinary experience by the name of Jake and Eli.
The Cosmopolitan announced the addition of the REVV IV Wellness Spa, that opened this past spring. The Ice Rink—roof-top ice skating opens for Thanksgiving on Nov. 21.
The Monte Carlo has been rebranded as the Park MGM with a remodeled lobby, restaurants, meeting spaces and guest rooms, and have introduced the famous Los Angeles-based Korean chef, Roy Choi to attract additional guests who enjoy that type of food.
Harrahs just completed $140 million project remodeling guest rooms and suites and updating their lobby and casino. Just down the road at the MGM Grand, KA by Cirque du Soleil opens soon.
Not to be outdone, the downtown hotel district has also been busy using their profits to remodel and refresh their properties. The El Cortez spruced up their guest rooms and made significant improvements in the lobby and reception area. The Plaza Hotel and Casino is showing an original production of “The Mob Story”, a realistic portrayal of the Mob in Las Vegas.
They are getting it all ready for the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday period which really is a booming time for them. The National Bullriding event and the National Finals Rodeo bring untold thousands into town for those events in the next two months. For example, I just looked at a booking going on Dec. 6-10, 4 nights from DFW, with air and MGM hotel and tax were running a little over $3,000 for a party of two.
