Orlando's Crowing BIG TIME!!!!
And......they have much to crow about!!! Tourism officials announced last week that they became the first United States destination to surpass 70 million annual visitors. They greeted 72 million visitors in 2017 which is a 5% increase over the previous year.
They set several records in the process, recording convention attendance at 1.53 million attendees, and record airline arrivals at the Orlando International Airport of 44.6 million passengers. Domestic visitors reached 65.86 million and the international visitor count was 6.15 million all in 2017.
Of course this did not hurt Walt Disney World and Universal Studios!!! They had something to crow about too. Recent reports have the Disney theme parks realizing 13% increase in the first quarter to $4.87 billion....a real nice piece of change. We mentioned in a report on March 1 that they were raising the price of admission to all their parks. Due to the increase in guest spending, and the increase in ticket prices, higher hotel rates and more income from their food and beverage offerings, plus the interest in their merchandise spending all added to that “nice piece of change”.
As we mentioned too, and it was recently reported again, that they have a major interest in Disney for the Chinese market. Plus they are planning on adding other attractions like the Toy Story Land, Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy Ride at Epcot, the Star Wars hotel, and the world of Avatar Land at Animal Kingdom. Some of the Disney fun facts I've found: did you know that Mickey Mouse has more than 290 different sets of duds, ranging from a scuba suit to a tuxedo and the Minnie Mouse has more than 200 outfits including a cheerleader ensemble to evening gowns. Another interesting fact is that on any given day, photographers take between 100,000 and 200,000 photos of guests at Walt Disney World. And, when laid end to end, there are enough of the famous “Mouse Ear” hats sold each year to stretch 175 miles or cover the head of every man, woman and child in Orange County. And....there are also enough Disney character T-shirts sold to put Mickey Mouse's smiling face on the chest of every resident of Montana!!!
Speaking of “hot” vacation spots, and one you really wonder about.....the country of Mexico enjoyed a record visitor count in the first quarter with 10.6 million tourist, which was a 12.6% increase compared to 9.5 million in the same quarter last year. Despite the challenges of weather and the sensational media reports because of the revised travel advisory system of the United States, they appear to be continuing to climb the ladder of one of the most visited destinations in the world.
