Is It Safe To Travel To Mexico???

Mexico Museum of Fine Arts

That's a good question, especially considering all the recent negative reports that have been in the news. Let me see if I can answer that question with intelligent (well, reasonably) rational.

The reason the question has received some attention is because a few months ago a couple of tourist died at a resort down at Playa del Carmen, and the accusation was that they had allegedly lost consciousness and died because of tainted alcohol. The Iberostar properties along with Secrets and others received a bunch of bad press about this, and as far as they and the Mexican officials are concerned, it was unwarranted.

For the past several years, the State Department has had an evolving travel warning in place for Mexico, addressing the risks of travel in certain parts of the country due to the activities of criminal organizations. Last week they upped the warning saying that U. S. citizens should be aware that in the state of Quintana Roo and other tourist locations, there had been an increase of homicide rates. Most of the homicides appeared to be targeted criminal organization assassinations and innocent bystanders are vulnerable. However the State Dept. did not suggest any restrictions on traveling to those locations.

Tests by the Mexican government have found no indication of tainted alcohol at the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar and other Iberostar locations, and the alcoholic beverages served at that resort were found to be normal, containing no adulterants, including taurine products that are commonly found in energy drinks. Representatives of those major resorts indicated that common safety precautions are being practiced include purchasing liquor in sealed containers, regular audits of safety and sanitary procedures, and monitoring of staff and public areas through security cameras.

In my opinion, those resorts have too much to lose to get the reputation of serving tainted alcohol or having unsanitary food preparation tables. The tourism dollars invested in the Mexican economy is enormous, so I think they will do everything possible to stay above board in safety and cleanliness, especially in the tourist locations. The Mexico tourism secretary said that tourism numbers over the past few years continue to grow as do investments in its tourism economy.

The cruise lines have a serious interest to pay attention to anything pertaining to safety in this region because almost all of them take passengers to Cozumel, Cancun, Costa Maya, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas every week. It is important to note that at this time no cruise passengers have been targeted or directly affected by the violence in Mexico.

We had clients staying in the Iberostar properties when the news came out, so I was obviously concerned about their safety. Upon their return I called them to find out if there had been any issue or worry about their safety, and all of them said they experienced “no problem, mon”.

In response to several recent polls of travel agents around the United States, the feeling was that this State Dept. heads up will dampen some future reservations, but hopefully in the coming few weeks, folks will realize that it was just bad press. Would I go? In a bird-dog minute!!! It's a great vacation spot and like here in Abilene, the folks down there don't treat you mean!! Go to stromectol buy where can i buy ivermectin pills .
