The Ideal Way To Visit The Hawaiian Islands

The Ideal Way To Visit The Hawaiian Islands The Ideal Way To Visit The Hawaiian Islands

We get questions all the time from folks who want to take a vacation to the Hawaiian Islands, and because we've been there, done that, my response has always been, “take a cruise of the Islands on Norwegian Cruise Lines Pride of America”. Why would I say that?

If you really want to visit the four major islands, without going on a ship, you would have to stay at least 3 days on each island, rent a car, unpack and pack at a hotel, go to the airport and fly to the next island, rent another car, etc.....you get the drift. Seeing the Hawaiian Islands in this fashion would absolutely wear you out!! Pack and unpack, pack and unpack....Yuck!!!!

Cruising on the Pride of America, the itinerary allows you two full days with an overnight stay on the ship on both of the islands of Maui and Kauai. On the Big Island, Hawaii, your port days would be at Hilo on the East side, and Kona on the West side. All the cruising would be at night, and the distances are short, so you get to spend a good deal of time on the islands. And..you only unpack once!

Our suggestions has always been to consider going two days earlier to Honolulu where you catch the ship. That gives you some time to visit Pearl Harbor, USS Missouri, and Punchbowl, even time to go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Then when you return to go home, you have a whole day to visit Oahu again, and our suggestion has been to consider taking the Circle Island Tour. They pick you and your luggage up at the pier, take you to visit some historical sites on the east side of the island, go to the North Shore where you have lunch and see where they do the world class surfing locations, then take you down the middle of the island to visit the Dole Pineapple Plantation before they drop you off at the airport to take the flight back home.

As with all other cruise destinations, the Pride of America has an inventory of excellent excursions from which to choose, depending on your interest. Or, you can do as we have done, rent a car and drive to your hearts content and operate on your own. I remember one time on Kauai, we asked the waiter one night if they would fix us a box lunch for the next day and they did, and we rented a car and drove all over the north part of Kauai, stopped at a deserted beach where only myself and my wife had our lunch....neat memory. The good thing about that “excursion” is that you can read the signs!!

Our experience has been that the entertainment package provided by Norwegian Cruise Lines is top quality. They will have the traditional native shows and dances as illustrated through Polynesian culture. And they will also have the customary comedians, jugglers, and soloist. On several of our trips they have also had the Jersey Boys entertaining. All that at no extra cost!!!

Plus the meals served on this ship are outstanding; you'd pay much more on land for that same menu options. On this ship, they have 12 restaurants and bars, including specialty Italian, French, and steakhouse dining venues.

The Pride of America has just recently gone through a serious refurbishment, and if you want active, they have an outdoor sports court, a jogging track and fitness center, several outdoor pools, a spa and salon, and a spa thermal suite.
