Getting Through Security At The Airports
We hear more objections to flying to a destination than just about anything else involved in making vacation or travel arrangements. Most of the frustration has to do with the accommodations on the airplane and having to deal with inconsiderate folks who sit in front of you or in some cases next to you. Of course, we generally can't do anything about that except endure it for several hours.
One thing I think we all could do something about is dressing up our attitude about going through the process of taking a trip on an airplane. By that I mean look at the positives of the experience. For sure, if you are wanting to get from A to B, it's usually always quicker to do it by air. Also, everyone is exposed to the security procedures, so be thankful for that.
The security procedures have recently been given a bad rap, justifiably so, but I think since the security snafu during the Memorial Day around the nation, the Transportation Security Administration has paid close attention to procedures and hired more personnel, and things are getting better from what I hear from our travelers and from my own personal experience.
Another thing that I think we can do to help our attitude is to be educated about going through the security process. Here are a few tips:
- You can carry liquids in your carry-ons, but they cannot be over 3.4 ounces and have to be placed inside one clear, quart-size, plastic, zip-loc bag. Only one bag per passenger.
-
As long as you declare with the security guard, baby formula or milk or prescription medications that are over the 3.4 oz. limits will be allowed.
-
Vitamins and other medications do not have to be in their original containers but can be in the daily pill reminders.
-
Some people have asked if they can carry food through security, and as long as it is in a single zip-lock bag it will be allowed. The best strategy is to leave the food at home and after getting through the check point you can purchase whatever you want and take it on. You can take water and soft drinks or any other liquids after going through security....even an Egg McMuffin.
-
How about scissors or tweezers in my checked bag? Those are permitted with the exception that scissor blades cannot exceed 4 inches. Remember to put your little knife in checked bag.
-
We had several people with us recently with their C-PAP machines, pacemakers, and artificial hips and knees, and I just advised them to let the security officer know of their condition so the officers can determine which is the best way to screen them and their equipment. Every one of them had absolutely no problem easily making it through.

One of the good things about being over 75 is that you don't have to remove your shoes. Otherwise put your coat and everything in your pocket, jewelry, shoes, belt, cell phone, cameras, and laptops in a tray before you step through the metal detector or full body scanner. When doing that just remember that this is a procedure designed for your protection....everyone has to do it.
You can also go to www.tsa.gov to read all the information they offer regarding what you can take and not take with you through security.
