You've Just Won A Free Trip!!!

You've Just Won A Free Trip!!!

Those are words coveted by just about everyone I know.  I’m always being asked if I have any free trips to give away.  I smile, knowingly, and let them know that there is nothing in travel free. . .somebody, somewhere, had to purchase those travel products.  A lot of folks get telephone calls telling them that they have won a “free” trip, but to be able to claim it, it will cost them $99.98.  Then they will tell them they need their credit card to hold the “free” ticket.  Then if you fall for this ruse, you’ll find that there will be certain restrictions and conditions which will make the trip more expensive, or even impossible to take your “free” trip.  The best thing to do when you receive one of these calls is just to hang up. . .they are invading YOUR “free” space!!!

It’s been over a year since I mentioned anything in my weekly reports about the travel scams that are rampant, so I thought I’d give some cautious tips again to everyone with a few words from the American Society of Travel Agents.  They make some real good suggestions when evaluating travel offers.

  • Be extremely skeptical about unsolicited e-mail, postcard and phone solicitations saying you’ve been selected to receive a fabulous vacation, and be especially wary of firms requiring you to wait at least 60 days to take your trip.

  • Do your homework.  Some offers might sound great on the surface, but be sure to read the fine print. . looking for black-out dates, companion fees and other restrictions.

  • Check to see if the firm that is making the offer are members of a Better Business Bureau, that is if you can get an address, before giving them your credit card.

  • Keep your private information private.  Never give out your credit card number unless you initiate the transaction and you are confident about the company with which you are doing business.

  • Require them to give you the complete details in writing about any trip offered prior to your payment of any kind.  Details should include total price, cancellation and change penalties, and specific information about all components of the package.

  • If you insist on replying to an e-mail or calling a 900-number in response to a travel solicitation, understand that there will be charges and know the risks.

  • High pressure sales presentations that don’t allow you time to evaluate the offer, or which require that you disclose your income or credit card information are red flags to be heeded.
