It's Not a Small World... After All!!!

Probably the most family-fun orientated vacation that we enjoy planning is the trip to Disney World. Excitement builds in anticipation of the trip, the kids absolutely love it, the parents endure it, but looking back when they return home they discover, years later, memories of that magical trip to visit Mickey and friends.

Disney has published some “Fun Facts” about Walt Disney World that I thought interesting.  We don’t have near the time or space to talk about all of them, but just a few will whet your appetite for planning a vacation while the kids are young.  Best time for them is from 6-12 years of age. . .they’ll never forget the experience.

You will be surprised, even if you’ve been there, that Disney World covers 40 square miles. . about the size of San Francisco or two Manhattan islands.  Of the more than 25,000 acres, less than 35% has been developed with a 25% of it being designated as a wilderness.

It takes 62,000 people to create the magic at Vacation Kingdom. . .they are the largest single-site employer in the United States.  Maybe we need a Magic Kingdom in every state; do you suppose that’s one of the initiatives Mr. Romney is thinking about?

Here’s one that takes some imagination.  If you were to wash and dry one load of laundry every day for 52 years, you’d clean as much as the folks at Walt Disney World Laundry do in a single day.  They launder an average of 285,000 pounds each day; in addition between 30,000 and 32,000 garments are dry-cleaned daily.

Listen to the gastronomical intake at The World:  more than 75 million Cokes are consumed each year along with 13 million bottles of water.  Guests also gobble 10 million hamburgers, 6 million hotdogs, 9 million pounds of French fries, and more than 300,000 pounds of popcorn.

More than 30 tons of fruits and vegetables are grown at The Land pavilion at Epcot and served in Walt Disney World restaurants.

Nearly 12% of Walt Disney World property, an area equivalent to nearly 3000 football fields, is devoted to gardens and maintained landscapes. . .that’s 4,000 acres of beauty.  The horticulture staff plants 3 million bedding plants and annuals, and maintains millions of other plants including more than 4 million shrubs, and 13,000 roses.
