Buffalo Gap Showplace(s)...With A Little Bit Of Abilene To Boot!!!

Buffalo Gap Showplace(s)...With A Little Bit Of Abilene To Boot!!!

Normally I don't print, virtually verbatim, from articles I've read, however, today's comments come from a contributor to the Dallas Morning News, June Naylor. She visits the Perini enterprises quite often, and had some real good things to say about their offerings of lodging, meals, and shopping in a recent article. We don't sell bed and breakfast properties, but this one is worth mentioning.

She starts the column off describing lunch at the Perini Ranch Steakhouse patio. It's a great place to have Sunday lunch too. She mentioned something I didn't know about that former first lady Laura Bush celebrated her 70th birthday there and was serenaded by George Strait. Wish I had been there!!

Another accolade was given for dinner inside the Steakhouse. They enjoyed a corner table by one of the fireplaces and enjoyed a classic margarita and the bacon-wrapped jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and a skillet of juicy chicken-fried quail legs. Um-boy, my mouth is really watering now!! She likes Tom's “cowboy” (bone-in) rib-eye and lamb chops, and the wine selections on Lisa's List written on a brown paper sack are her favorite picks. There were 16 of us in that dining room last Sunday for the lavish lunch buffet, with the fireplace burning warmly, and enjoyed topping the lunch off with their famous bread pudding.....and the wait staff was superb.

Spending the night at the Perini Ranch guest quarters is a real treat also. The 1885 farmhouse accommodates 5 and comes with a full kitchen, living room and a huge deck where one can lounge around with a good book and watch the birds and occasional wild turkey exploring the neighborhood.

If you are looking for some shopping, just down the road in beautiful Buffalo Gap, within the shades of some centuries-old oak and pecan trees are some shopping jewels. Lisa has a mercantile shop within an old clapboard-and stone cottage where shelves are stocked with jams, jellies, and salsa made nearby or within the state. You could also shop at the farmer's market before going in where you can find fresh vegetables and herbs grown in adjacent gardens. There is also kitchenware, assorted linens, t-shirts, toys and treats galore.

Across the street the Perinis just opened their Supper Club, a private dining venue inside a 1920s general store that was owned by Tom's ancestors. He is an avid collector of everything old, so you can see a vintage post office boxes, a hotel front desk, a wooden ice box, apothecary shelves, barn lights, an iron stove and mismatched chairs and tables are set up to dine. And you don't want to miss the Buffalo Gap Historic Village....very historic.

Then, how about the good food, drinks, and shopping in historic Abilene? Downtown is full of good places to eat like the little bistro Abi-Haus, Bogies, Cypress Street, and Bee Hive. Shopping at Betty & June, Casa Authentique, Texas Star Trading Company, are just a few places to enjoy finding and buying. Then while you are downtown, consider visiting Frontier Texas, the Grace Museum, Judy Klotz Fine Art, the Abilene Visitors Center housed in a renovated train station, World War II Museum and Abilene Center for Children's Literature...enough fun to last all day long. Buying ammunition online can save you money and get you far more in terms of choice.
