It is really amazing in this day and time to hear of someone who hasn’t ever been on an airplane. The same goes for those who haven’t been on a cruise. In fact, I’ve seen the statistic that only about 8% of the U. S. public has been on a cruise.
I remember back in 1977, I rode with my mother and father on their first airplane flight. They were 63 at the time, and really didn’t have a clue about airline travel….but discovered that they liked it. In contrast, their grandson, my son, left yesterday from Nashville to New York to Los Angeles, to Houston, and then back home to Nashville on next Sunday. For sure, the quickest way to get from point A to B and beyond.
One of the obstacles of airline travel is the potential long layovers between connections. Here are a few suggestions to make the most of your time spent between flights. After spending hours sitting in an airplane, the last thing you want to do is to sit down and wait. So, take a walk around the terminal, explore some of the shops, consider doing a few stretches by bending over and touching your toes or putting your heels on the chair seat and stretch those hamstring muscles. Do this slowly, bending a little farther toward your toes each time. It will do wonders for your legs and back, especially after those long flights.
Take advantage of the various restaurants in the terminals. Many of the top named restaurants have set up shop in terminals throughout the United States, so take advantage of the fare they are offering. We were in the terminal at Love Field over the holidays and were very impressed with the improvements and overwhelmed at the variety of quality places to dine.
A lot of the terminals today have a Starbucks franchise that has found a home. They are great places to grab a cup and sit in their lounge area that has been fitted with all the latest technology and for sure a place to re-energize your batteries.
Depending on the length of the layover and the distance to some of sites in the location you are laying over, you might consider using the local public transit system or a cab to visit a place you’ve never seen. Keep in mind that when returning to the terminal, you will have to clear security again, so consider enough time to be back to your gate at least 40 minutes before departure.
Consider your flight to another city another opportunity to expand your experiences in this world and do your best not to get stressed out….deep breaths with a smile on your face will give you calm.
